This is typically due to dyes, plastic packaging, or long-distance shipment. The smell is usually not overwhelming, but it can be noticeable if you open the packaging in a small room. Denim items sometimes have a stronger scent, similar to new jeans from retail stores, but occasionally slightly sharper because of the dye used.
